These conventions arise from the natural human tendency to seek stable patterns that enable cooperation.

Nostr is building the communication layer, the means by which pseudonymous participants can find each other, negotiate terms, and coordinate activity. What remains to be built is the trust layer: the decentralized protocols for bonding, escrow, witnessing, arbitration, and reputation that would transform these components into a functional economy.

Decentralization is therefore a survival requirement, not a technical preference. The infrastructure for trust intermediation described above must be implemented in a manner that distributes control across many parties, none of whom can be compelled to shut down the system or surrender its users. This is precisely the architecture that Bitcoin pioneered for money and that Nostr is pioneering for communication.

These properties suggest that trust in anonymous systems can be structured, pooled, and traded much like financial instruments in conventional markets. A bondsman in an anonymous marketplace performs essentially the same function as a surety company in the conventional economy: he sells trust.

The cypherpunks solved the technical problems of encryption and anonymity decades ago, yet private commerce remains marginal. The missing ingredient is not better math but better institutions for managing trust without identity.

This is not an argument against vigilance. Organizations should still vet members, should still pay attention when someone's story does not add up, should still refuse to tolerate the aggressive and divisive behavior that documented infiltrators have consistently displayed. The point is that these measures are a second line of defense, not the primary one. The primary defense is structural: build so that even successful infiltration cannot achieve its objectives.

The cypherpunk tradition offers a different framework for thinking about the infiltration problem, one that begins by accepting the presence of adversaries as a design constraint rather than a failure to be prevented. Eric Hughes wrote in A Cypherpunk's Manifesto that "we cannot expect governments, corporations, or other large, faceless organizations to grant us privacy," and the same logic applies to organizational security. The goal is not to achieve perfect exclusion of adversaries but to build systems where their presence cannot accomplish its purpose.

These cases point toward a fundamental asymmetry that detection-focused security culture cannot overcome. The state can afford to be patient, to invest years in building cover, to provide resources and training that make their agents useful to the organizations they infiltrate. The activist trying to spot the spy, by contrast, has only suspicion and intuition to work with. The standard advice to watch for inconsistencies in background stories, unexplained access to resources, or eagerness to push toward illegal activity is not wrong, but it fails against the competent infiltrator who has been coached to avoid exactly these tells. Worse, a detection-obsessed culture breeds the paranoia that COINTELPRO documents explicitly sought to create. An FBI memo from 1970 advised agents to encourage "the impression that there is an FBI agent behind every mailbox" because the resulting suspicion and internal conflict would do more damage than any individual informant. When movements consume themselves with accusations and counter-accusations, the state wins without lifting a finger.

The FBI's COINTELPRO program, which officially operated from 1956 to 1971 but whose tactics continued long after its formal termination, placed informants inside virtually every significant dissident movement of its era. The Black Panthers, the antiwar movement, the civil rights organizations, the socialist parties, and the environmental groups all discovered, often too late, that trusted members had been reporting to handlers throughout. The Church Committee investigation revealed not merely passive surveillance but active provocation: forged documents designed to create internal splits, anonymous letters spreading rumors about leaders, and agents deliberately encouraging illegal activity to justify prosecution. When FBI assistant director William Sullivan testified about these tactics, he was blunt about the operational mindset: "No holds were barred. We have used these techniques against Soviet agents. They have used them against us. We did not differentiate."

Every dissident organization eventually wonders whether it has been infiltrated, and the honest answer is that it probably has been, or will be, or would be if it ever became effective enough to matter. The documented history of state counterintelligence programs reveals an uncomfortable truth that no detection checklist can fully address: when the state decides to penetrate an organization, it brings resources, training, and patience that most targets cannot match. The more important question is not how to spot the spy but how to build structures that render the spy's presence futile.

The economic viability of such arrangements depends on a fundamental asymmetry that cypherpunks identified as essential to technological freedom: defense must be cheaper than offense. This principle, which explains why guerrilla movements can outlast empires and why encryption defeats surveillance, finds its purest expression in spaces the state has economically abandoned. The calculation is brutally simple - when the cost of extending control over a densely packed urban favela or scattered rural community exceeds any possible tax revenue or political benefit, the state withdraws its claims if not its rhetoric.

The vast favelas that ring Latin American cities house perhaps one hundred million people who have built entire civilizations outside the formal structures of the state. These communities, dismissed by comfortable observers as mere slums, have developed sophisticated systems of property registration based on community witness and social memory. When a family builds a house in a favela, their ownership rests on the testimony of neighbors who watched the foundation being laid, who know which children grew up in which rooms, who can trace the history of every improvement and transaction. This social knowledge creates property rights often more secure than official titles, which can be voided by political whim or lost in bureaucratic shuffle.

The state is not the solution to financial repression because it is the source of it. You cannot vote your way out of a surveillance-based monetary regime. You cannot regulate your way back to sovereignty.

But the hatred goes deeper than policy disputes. Those who hate money hate it because it reminds them of what they are not. Every transaction is a mirror reflecting their own lack of productive capacity. Every price tag is an indictment of their inability to create value others would voluntarily purchase. Money is the messenger they wish to kill because they dislike the message: that value must be created before it can be consumed, that production must precede consumption, that someone must make before anyone can take.

The alternative to money is not some utopia where goods flow to each according to need. The alternative is either barter, which is merely less efficient money, or force, which is the destroyer of production itself. When men cannot trade peacefully using an agreed medium of exchange, they must either do without trade or take what they want through violence. History offers no third option.

But need is not a claim. That someone requires food does not obligate others to provide it. That someone desires healthcare does not create a right to the labor of doctors and nurses. Need is infinite; production is finite. The only just system is one where those who produce trade voluntarily with others who produce, each offering value in exchange for value. Money simply facilitates this exchange by providing a common medium and store of value across time.

This is why such people invariably prefer systems of allocation other than voluntary exchange. They speak of "need" as if it were a claim on the productive effort of others. They invoke "fairness" to disguise their demand that those who produce should subsidize those who do not. They create elaborate theories of exploitation to explain why those who create value somehow owe it to those who create none.

No, the loudest critics of money are invariably those who seek it without earning it. The academic who produces papers nobody reads, funded by taxes extracted from those who do produce. The politician who promises to redistribute wealth he did not create to voters who did not earn it. The activist who demands resources for causes that generate no value anyone would voluntarily purchase. They hate money precisely because it is an objective measure of value created, and they create no value. Money exposes their parasitism simply by existing as an honest accounting of productive effort.

The implications cascade from this simple truth. If money represents production, then the accumulation of money represents the accumulation of past productive effort. The wealthy man, assuming he earned rather than stole his wealth, has created value for others on a grand scale. His bank account is a ledger of problems solved, desires satisfied, and efficiencies created. To damn him for his wealth is to damn him for his productivity, which is to say, for his virtue in creating what others valued enough to purchase.

Money is stored choice. When a craftsman shapes wood into furniture, a programmer transforms logic into software, or a farmer coaxes wheat from soil, they create value that did not previously exist. Their effort, guided by knowledge and skill, increases the total wealth available to humanity. Money is simply the token that represents a claim on this created value in a form that can be stored and exchanged. It is a certificate of production, a transferable option on future goods, the physical symbol of the fact that someone, somewhere, made something that another person wanted enough to trade for. This is why money cannot be created by decree. Governments that print currency create only paper, not wealth. They redistribute claims on existing production through the hidden tax of inflation, but they cannot print the production itself. A million freshly printed dollars cannot conjure a single loaf of bread into existence. Only human effort directed by human minds can do that. Money divorced from production is merely colored paper, a counterfeit claim on wealth that was never created.

When I think about all the time I spent engaging in politics, listening to podcasts, scrolling on X, and arguing with people who I will never meet or know, I am beyond embarrassed. I coped by telling myself I was “staying informed” or “learning.” But in reality, it was a tragic waste. Never again will I be so stupid. From here on out, my focus is going toward that which I love. That which matters to me. I’m committed to treating my time and attention like the precious commodity that it is, and not a cheap trinket that I trade for whatever the algo or this ever-pervasive media-machine wants to draw my attention to.

Against other outlaws, the situation permits more conventional thinking. When a predator calculates whether to attack, they weigh expected gains against expected costs. Security succeeds when it makes that calculation unfavorable. This requires neither overwhelming force nor sophisticated weaponry, only sufficient visible preparation to signal that easier targets exist elsewhere. The elaborate defenses of medieval castles worked not because they could withstand any siege but because besieging them was expensive enough to deter most attempts. The same principle applies to any protected space: make attack costly, deny the possibility of quick victory, ensure that anyone contemplating aggression understands they will pay a price disproportionate to any potential gain.

But peace is not passivity. Successful defense requires active preparation long before any threat materializes, beginning with the recognition that location and access determine vulnerability more than any other factors. The source of most security failures is inadequate gatekeeping rather than inadequate firepower: the willingness to allow unknown elements into protected spaces without screening, the failure to control the paths by which adversaries might approach. Every competent nightclub operator understands that good bouncers at the door prevent more violence than any number of armed guards inside. The principle scales to any autonomous zone: know who enters, control how they arrive, and maintain awareness of the approaches by which attack might come.

Peace is the first defense. This observation seems obvious until one watches how many people conduct themselves as though inviting attack. The Second Realm operates through discretion rather than display, through quiet competence rather than aggressive posturing. Those who build parallel institutions succeed by not provoking the forces that would destroy them. They do not brag about their activities. They do not challenge adversaries unnecessarily. They maintain integrity in their dealings because reputation is the only enforcement mechanism available when state courts are off limits. Quietness, honesty, and confidence, combined in proper measure, prevent more conflicts than any arsenal.

The bottleneck in Open Source is rarely new ideas or new code. It's people willing to maintain what already exists: reviewing, deciding, onboarding new people, and holding context for years. I have seen projects stall because nobody wanted to do that work, and others survive because a few people quietly stepped up. Maintainers do the work that keeps everything together. If you want a project to last, you have to take care of your maintainers.

First, I added content negotiation to my site. When a request includes Accept: text/markdown in the HTTP headers, my site returns the Markdown instead of the rendered HTML. Second, I made it possible to append .md to any URL. For example, https://dri.es/principles-for-life.md gives you clean Markdown with metadata like title, date, and tags. But how did those crawlers find the Markdown version so fast? I borrowed a pattern from RSS: RSS auto-discovery. Many sites include a link tag with rel="alternate" pointing to their RSS feed. I applied the same idea to Markdown: every HTML page now includes a link tag announcing that an alternative Markdown version exists at the .md URL. That "Markdown auto-discovery" turned out to be the key. The crawlers parse the HTML, find the alternate Markdown link, and immediately switch. That explains the hundreds of requests I saw within the first hour. The speed of adoption tells me AI agents are hungry for cleaner content formats and will use them the moment they find them. What I don't know yet is whether this actually benefits me. It might lead to more visibility in AI answers, or it might just make it easier for AI companies to use my content without sending traffic back. I know not everyone will love this experiment. Humans, including me, are teaching machines how to read our sites better, while machines are teaching humans to stop visiting us. The value exchange between creators and AI companies is far from settled, and it's entirely possible that making content easier for AI to consume will accelerate the hollowing out of the web.

Dercks also confirmed that the country is commencing a major process of deindustrialisation. Indeed, the report noted that 51 percent of companies based in Germany with at least 500 employees, as well as 45 percent of companies bearing high power costs, are either considering moving their operations out of the country and reducing domestic production or have already begun doing so. Such figures are also, respectively, 8 percent and 7 percent higher than those in the same report published in 2023, thus reflecting the acuteness of the problems faced by German industry more recently. The companies cited the uncertain policy future in Germany as a key reason for their changing positions on domestic production, as they are increasingly uncompetitive in international markets and have less capital to invest in research and development (R&D) to improve their market positioning.

The algorithmic feeds on legacy social media (LSM) are going to continue to deteriorate over time, basically turning into reddit front page slop. Being on LSM is proving to be such a waste of time man. You literally have to post like a slop influencer just for the elon algorithm to grant you the privilege of having any engagement. It sucks.

I am building Apollo Q&A, and have drafted a specification for the event structure. Looking for feedback before finalizing. The spec defines five event kinds (questions, answers, suggested edits, bounties, answer requests) and covers: - Question status lifecycle (open -> locked -> closed -> archived) - Edit suggestions with co-authorship - Sats-based bounties for incentivizing answers - Permission model for locked/restricted questions Where possible, it references existing NIPs (NIP-25 for voting, NIP-22 for comments, NIP-09 for deletion) rather than creating custom kinds. Full specification: [APOLLO NIP STRUCTURE](https://github.com/samuelralak/apollo/blob/main/APOLLO_NIP_STRUCTURE.md) What's missing? What would you change?

The document outlined a program of building parallel structures: "We are using networking, cryptography, sound money, digital currency and anonymous messaging to expand the realm of the free and reduce the realm of the governed." Each technology served a strategic purpose: networking enabled coordination without geographic constraint; cryptography protected communication from surveillance; sound money preserved value outside central bank manipulation; digital currency enabled transfer outside banking surveillance; anonymous messaging protected identity while enabling collaboration.

How Pensieve Works I took an archive-first approach. Rather than piping everything directly into an analytics database, Pensieve first stores canonical events in compressed archive files using a format called notepack. Notepack was created by @jb55 and is a fast and highly compressable binary data format for nostr events. Why the extra step? Durability and portability. These archives can be backed up, shared with researchers who need historical data, or used to bootstrap a new instance. They're the source of truth.

Secondly, African economies should also be prepared to put in place sound policy frameworks through which they can build credibility for their currencies and, therefore, avoid the risk of dollarisation.
